River Management News - 03.12.2009

On the 9th of December, a team from the Department of Transport will be heading to Guilderton to make three significant changes, which will hopefully increase safety on the river for all users.
  • New, more prominent signage which will make the laws and regulations covering river use clearer and will be hard for people to miss.  The aim of the new signage will be to remove ignorance of the laws as an excuse, ignoring the signs will have to be a deliberate act.
  • 15 new speed limit buoys will be installed, which will replace the existing buoys.
  • Some of these buoys will be in a line straight across the river from the desert.  These buoys will act as a visual barrier to encourage people to slow down in the vicinity of the desert.

As well as the above changes, the following new gazettals will be made.  These new gazettals will be made clear on the new signage.

  • The whole river will be gazetted as closed to jetskis
  • Three areas (including Silver Creek) will be closed to any kind of motorised boat.
It is gratifying to see that the many years of discussions between the community and the government on the issue of river safety is finally bearing fruit.
